Couple of Irish descent leave inner city London life, buy a thatched cottage in Co. Donegal, start a family, and attempt to grow veg, start a mini-festival and bore people with their thoughts, activities and family news through th'internet. Enjoy!

After S and Siún carved it up I made us a crispy pancetta with roasted pumpkin risotto.
Thank you Donal Skehan.
It's been tooooo long. Excuses are - still working hard on the house, not as hard as previously admittedly and just generally being a bit knackered of an evening but we must try harder. I do have a little something to put together so I'll try and get that on soon.

Back from Kazakhstan, where horses were tamed, trousers invented, where all apples originate and where they eat horses, don't they (billboard for horse meat restaurant above).
Building works are on-going:

The end is in sight but with the builders due to break through into the house destroying our only kitchen and working in the kids bedroom too, me and the god-forbids are off to England leaving S to have lie ins, project manage the house and source items with which to feather our family nest.

We had planned a lovely weekend away visiting Aedin and Caoimhe in Dublin and seeing my mum and dad and Auntie Anne who were over for a wedding. It all started to go wrong as soon as we got there. Just as we arrived at Aedin's on Friday night my dad rang and said they were going home the next day once they got a flight as Anne was very ill and was in hospital. However, the next day her treatment had been enough that she felt better even though she was out of hospital she needed to sleep for most of the day. So we saw my mum & dad and had a few hours with them. We then had the evening with Aedin having a lovely time until just at bed time Murphy started vomiting and then once he was empty he retched for another two hours. Just as we were ringing the out of hours doctor service he fell asleep and slept through the night. At 1.30am Siún woke up and vomited everywhere. The next day (Sunday) each feed we gave Murphy he vomited back up so we decided to head home early. They slept well enough in the car until we stopped for lunch. To be safe and being worried about dehydration we tried to give Murph just sterlised water. He took it well enough, but threw it up as well. So once we hit Donegal we went straight to the out of hours service who referred him straight to the hospital. So we headed home to drop me and Siún off then S and Murphy would go on to the hospital. As we arrived home Siún threw up everywhere in the car. So we unpacked quickly S and Murph headed to hospital and I put Siún in the bath and then to bed. S and Murphy ended up staying in hospital two nights until he started keeping the rehydrating liquid and his feed down. They got home yesterday and we're only now starting to get back to normal.

Not a great photo, so you must be able to do better? Get them sent.
So, Swine Flu pandemic has been and gone. Not as harsh as Bird Flu and they're both wusses compared to Foot and Mouth. I swear the media here almost celebrated when Swine Flu was confirmed in one man here. What with this and the G20 protests in London, when is the media going to go back to reporting the news rather than trying to create it? News as entertainment indeed.

Whilst we were in the UK we made a couple of historic purchases. The first and biggest was what is termed a folding camper. With the growing family and with the successful Germany camping holiday we decided camping was the future cheap family holiday way to go. To that end we did a bit of research and soul searching as to what type of camping equipment we would prefer. A caravan was out as they are just too wrong. A tent was fairly quickly discounted as, no longer being a spring chicken, I do not relish sleeping on floors anymore. We were intrigued by trailer tents where you sleep off the ground but still have to peg out the main body of the structure. So we settled on a folding camper where you sleep off the ground but the top half of the trailer is canvas and folds down to make a low trailer and up to make a caravan type vehicle. There's no pegging out, when you pull out the beds the canvas raises itself and you can be making a cup of tea sitting at your table within 10 mins. You can attach the awning and usually do if you're stopping a while, but it's comfortable enough without. Our preferred model was the Conway Cruiser and whilst we were in Redditch we found one for sale on eBay just down the road in Stoke on Trent. It was a bargain, so we went and inspected it, bought it and parked it up in Redditch. We then came home, got a tow bar attached and I headed back to collect it on my own. I was bricking towing it all the way back home having never towed a thing in my life - but so long as I didn't have to reverse I was safe enough. It's here now, we've given it a good clean and are planning to take it for on holiay to Castlebar, Athlone, and Achill Island. The photo above is our actual camper but two of the photos below are merely representative of our particular model:

The real historic purchase was made in Redditch Kingfisher shopping centre. It was the last day of trading for Woolworth shops and out of a morbid curiosity we popped into the one there. It was actually quite sad, the shop was extremely bare, even the wall coveirngs had gone exposing the breeze block walls behind. There were piles of items stacked against the walls and basically just the tills left. In a section just by the tills were a number of fixtures and fittings, including a 'Wet Floor' warning cone for £2. However, my eye was immediately drawn to a leather chair set on a metal frame the type you would see in a staff canteen room. It had the bargain knock down price of £3 on it and I had no shame in carting it to the till and all the way home. It's sitting in a loft in Redditch awaiting pride of place in the new extension here where it will forever be known as the Woolworths chair.

After we left, I heard she'd moved into her new property, or "compound", which has "a lot more space" apparently and in which, I've been told, she has her own office, with, I'm sure, a secret lever or button.
I hope you're all well and still checking the blog despite another hiatus, but this one has a fair excuse. I won't go into everything that's happened in one posting, instead I'll spread it out over a few so that hopefully you'll come back for more and also so that I have a few reasons to update over the coming featureless February weeks.

November felt like a monster pile of activities. It started with a one week old baby and seemed to be non-stop. First there was the visit from Nanna and Pops (photo above). We entertained them with a visit to a car boot sale and lots of staying in. Then it was a quick night down in Dublin for a friends 40th Birthday, and a very nice meal was had. Two days later I popped to Berlin for a couple of days and had a very good time. Met Bert Trautmann where I found out that his name is actually Bernd but he even signs his autograph as Bert. And it's always easier coming home once we've won. Especially against the Germans. After getting home for a day it was back down to Dublin for a baby massage conference. Siún stayed with Granny & Grumps so it was the three of us that made the trip down. Just one night and a day there and we were heading back up the N4 on our four hour journey. Another day passes and I'm out to see Duke Special in Letterkenny. Very good gig but needless to say would have been more fun if I wasn't so tired. He's an eccentric type and he also sings in a Nordy accent such as "but the dark clydes gathered up above". A nice slow few days then I was off to London to see Quantum of Solace for my birthday. It felt like I landed, rushed to meet friends, saw the film, went to bed, rushed to meet my cousin, rushed to meet more friends, rushed to meet even more friends, trundled to a club, then I was back in bed, up early and back on the flight home. All a big whirl. Well, I say rushed, problems on the Piccadilly and Jubliee lines meant it wasn't that quick actually. Still, I had a good time and it was great to see everyone.
